San Resin ApplicationsStyrene Acrylonitrile resin is a copolymer plastic commonly used in place of Polystyrene due to its greater thermal resistance.

SAN copolymers are produced by the polymerization reaction of styrenes and acrylonitrile. The properties are dependent on the acrylonitrile content. Commercial grades of SAN offer different acrylonitrile molecular masses.

The transparency of SAN makes it one of the few plastics that can be used in clear applications. It’s glass-like clarity makes it a preferred plastic in the housewares market.

SAN is commonly used in the following applications:

  • Dishwasher-Safe Containers

  • Disposable Lighters

  • Brush Bristles

  • Auto Gauge Covers

  • Cosmetic Cases

  • Medical Syringes

  • Reflectors

  • Refrigerator Doors

  • Battery Cases

AdvantagesSome of the advantages of SAN include:

  • Excellent Rigidity/Stiffness

  • Excellent Load-Bearing Capacity

  • Excellent Chemical Resistance

  • High Flexural Strength

  • Good Appearance

  • Good Color-Ability

  • Good Clarity

  • Good Thermal Resistance

  • Good Dimensional Stability

  • Good Heat Resistance

  • Easily Processed

DisadvantagesSome of the disadvantages of SAN include:

  • Low Max Service Temperature

  • Hygroscopic

  • Yellowing with Age

  • Flammable with High Smoke Generation
